How Much Artificial Grass to Order
Measure once, choose the roll width that wastes least, and order the pieces in one go.
How do I measure for artificial grass?
Measure the length and width of each rectangular area in feet and multiply them for square feet. Artificial turf is cut to length from rolls of a fixed width (7.5 ft, 13 ft and 15 ft for Always Green lawn turf), so order enough pieces to span one side and cut each to the other, whichever way orders less turf. A 20 ft x 30 ft yard is 600 sq ft and needs about 12 bags of infill.
- Split the area into rectangles and measure each one's length and width in feet.
- Multiply length by width for each rectangle and add them up: that is your square footage.
- For each rectangle, divide one side by the roll width and round up: that is how many pieces run side by side, each cut to the other side. Try it both ways and keep the one that orders less turf; the table below does this for common sizes.
- Order whole feet. Cut pieces start at 15 ft long; shorter areas still buy the minimum length, so combine small areas into one piece where you can.
- Check it in the Installation Cost Calculator, which rounds measurements up for estimating; final square footage is confirmed by field measurement.
